Cedar Shingles Information

Cedar is one of the most durable of the softwoods and makes a perfect material for house shingles.  Cedar wood shingles can be added to oak frame buildings and to other types of construction to bring their benefits to the project.

Having a wood shingle roof is a traditional idea that has become more popular recently.  You might have seen wooden roof shingles for sheds or garages, for extensions to your property and also on homes.  That’s because cedar shingles are lightweight, easy to work with and offer a high standard of insulation.  They pair with other energy efficiency measures such as double glazing and cavity wall insulation to make your home thermally efficient while looking amazing.

When you look to buy shingles, you will see there are some different colour variations.  All offers that natural look that only wooden roof tiles can manage.  Two of the main options on offer for cedar shingles UK are red cedar shingles and western red cedar shingles.

If you want a truly rustic look for your property, then western red cedar shingle Blue Label products are ideal for the job, offering a rough and rustic look that is perfect for oak framed buildings and wood cabins.

Cedar does change colour naturally over time, so those red shingles will change their shade.  However, you can also get a number of stains and treatments that allow them to retain their natural colour if you prefer it.

Cedar shingle roof tiles have natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.  This means you don’t have to treat them and there is no concern about excess warping, rotting or cracks appearing in them.  Whether you choose to leave them to naturally weather or stain them to keep their colour, you will find they need much less maintenance than other styles of roof shingles.  Should you decide to treat them, you will need to re-stain or re-paint them at least once a year to ensure they retain the colour.

Trade Oak Buildings are one of the top suppliers of wooden shingles in the UK.  Our cedar roof shingles are suitable for pitched roofs up to 45 degrees and work with 150mm x 50mm oak rafters.  These red roof shingles complement our other cedar products and can also look stunning on any of our oak frame buildings.

As well as the shingles themselves, we also offer cedar ridge caps up to 2400mm in length.  These have a lead time of 4-6 weeks. We can also combine the purchased of cedar shingles with our other oak frame products and also with roof trusses.  This makes it easier to put everything together for the perfect structure from homes to extensions and garages.
